LI Group Cadet Competition

On 12 Jan 13, LIG held their annual Cadet Competition at the Pat-Med HS,\in Medford, NY.  Our squadron's color guard which competed on Saturday's competition  consisted of c/SMSgt Matthew Merlino (Commander), c/A1C Robert Fenton, c/Amn William Blomquist and c/Amn Mitchell Davanzo and represented our squadron with honor.  While we didn't take first place in all categories, we once again showed the character that this squadron is made of and adhered to the core values as all cadets and squadrons should.

c/Lt Col Carissa Lackey while home from college gave up her time to mentor and teach the color guard while postponing her studying for her Spaatz exam.  She did a fantastic job.  First Lt. Michele Renneberg mentored the team throughout their practice sessions and quizzed them at each practice on their general knowledge.  Without these two mentors this team would not have been as well prepared.  First Lt. Lackey came down in support of the unit on Saturday and once again baked her goodies for all to enjoy including the judges and the Gabreski Squadron.

Long Island Group Military Ball

On 26 Jan 13, LI Group held their 8th Annual Military Ball at Villa Lombardis in Holbrook, NY.  Over 40 squadron members, families and friends attended the Ball -  the largest number of attendees from any one unit for the second year in a row. Those in attendance were witness to the honors our squadron and two of its members received.

  • C/CMSgt Patrick Tracy was awarded the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. 's medal for Americanism and Patriotism
  • C/Capt Joshua Howard was this year's Long Island Group Cadet of the Year
  • The Leroy R. Grumman Cadet Squadron was this year's Long Island Group Squadron of the Year ---- for the second year in a row!
Cadet Tracy, who was a nominee for Cadet NCO of the Year, and Cadet Howard are both nominees for New York Wing Cadet NCO and Cadet of the Year Honors respectfully.  These awards will be given out at the New York Wing Conference being held in Lake George the first weekend in May of 2013.  Once again the Grumman Squadron will be well represented .

March Cadet Flying

On 2 March, three cadets, Richard Robertson, Emily Vaeth, and Shena Lawshe flew their first orientation ride in CAP's Cessna 206 aircraft on a three leg trip starting and ending at Islip MacArthur Airport. With landings at Groton airport in Connecticut and East Hampton NY, each cadet had the opportunity to handle one of Long Island Group's newest aircraft's controls from the right front seat and were excited, impressed and motivated by the experience.

Pershing Rifles Color Guard Competition

The Grumman Squadron Color Guard went down to Jacksonville, FL on 18 March not knowing that they would be competing in the color guard event against 17 university and college ROTC programs and not High School JROTC teams as they have done in the past. In spite of this, they finished in Second Place in Color Guard losing by 1 point to Appalachian State University.  The team was led by c/CMSgt Patrick Tracy and included Flag Bearer c/CMSgt Peter Girdvil and Riflemen c/TSgt's Travis Jensen and Steven Hororwitz.  They were escorted to Jacksonville by 1st Lt's Michele Renneberg (CG Mentor) and Ginny Lackey
