Cadets Awarded Special Medals

Much to their surprise and delight, two of our Suffolk Cadet Squadron VII’s cadets were presented medals at closing formation recently. Without any foreknowledge, C/Capt. Patrick J. Argento was called out "Front and Center" by Squadron Commander 1st. Lt. Robert Litzke. VFW Life Member, Herbert Clay, then marched out and presented him with the Veterans of Foreign Wars "Unit Cadet Officer of the Year" medal.  The accompanying letter stated in part that the award was issued "for exceptionally meritorious performance during the period January, 2008 through December, 2008....".

1st. Lt. Litzke then requested Lt. Col. Mackey to come forward and called out C/A1c Edward A. Mullen. Lt. Col. Mackey presented him with the Air Force Association "Unit Cadet of the Year" Medal and read the accompanying award letter.

Following the close of the formation, the two honored cadets got a chance to talk to Mr. Clay and Lt. Col. W. Glenn Mackey. Mr. Clay told some of his experiences in the US Navy Merchant Marine during W.W.II.  Lt. Col .Mackey., CAP, our squadron’s Aerospace Officer,  retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel and is a member of the local Air Force Association unit .

C/Captain Argento stated that "he was filled with pride" at the honor especially since in all his time in CAP he had not heard of anyone ever receiving this honor before.

In March, Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Michelle Mudge, a Commack High school senior, was awarded a full ROTC scholarship to the University of North Dakota. In addition, she has been awarded a $35,000 grant to pay for flight lessons to become a helicopter pilot. Upon graduation, she will be entered into the U.S. Army helicopter program for further training.

Awards:

In our squadron, one outstanding cadet per flight can be nominated by the Flight Leader or Sergeant for Merit Cadet of the Week. The Merit Cadet of the Quarter is the Cadet with the most nominations during the ending quarter.  The Merit Cadet of the Year is the cadet with the most nominations during the year. The award for Merit Cadet of the Year is free squadron dues for the following year.
